Designing America. Spain’s imprint in the USA

Fundación Consejo España-USA
National Library of Spain, Madrid. Spain

The exhibition Designing America. Spain’s imprint in the USA was held at the Biblioteca Nacional of Spain, from 4 July to 12 October 2014. After Madrid, it has been traveling through different cities in the United States.

In this exhibition, the Spanish contribution in building the land, landscape, and cities in the United States is displayed from the first foundations to the present day.

This influence is mainly shown by the cartographic funds accumulated by the National Library of Spain, but there is also room for technology, always with an informative and rigorous approach.

On the walls, maps are displayed along with information panels that divide the contents of the exhibition thematically. The whole exhibition is distributed following a black line that runs along the wall perimeter and serves, as well, as a link between the different contents.

The exhibition has been organized by the Fundación Consejo España-Estados Unidos in collaboration with the Biblioteca Nacional de España.

Indissoluble carried out the concept, design and production of the exhibition with a modular construction system performing as a central exhibition element. The 150 metal cubes of 1mm aluminum plate, made from 12 laser-cut pieces, show in their faces contents related to the exhibition and also create a permeable division in the room. This allows the visitor to enjoy the exhibition  without feeling wedged in a labyrinth of white walls.

The video installation “The Spanish border in North America” shows the history of the United States through the evolution of its borders from birth to the 20th century, while “The Spanish language in the American geography”, a spectacular installation with a length of more than 6 meters, shows, with colored threads, the influence of the Spanish language in the United States through its toponymy.

Indissoluble has also designed the catalog and the website.
