Located on the border between France and Switzerland, CERN is the world’s largest particle physics research laboratory, home to the Large Hadron Collider, LHC, which is 27 km in circumference and is the largest particle accelerator built to the date.
Microcosm is an interactive exhibition that presents the work developed at CERN.
The exhibition shows several real objects, taking visitors on a journey through CERN’s key facilities, from the first step in the accelerator chain, the LINAC, to a model of a section of the Large Hadron Collider that includes elements of superconducting magnets.
Visitors can control the particle accelerator, simulating the acceleration of the protons in the LHC and causing a collision within the experiments, as well as discover the scale of CERN’s monumental experiments, discover what is happening in the Large Hadron Collider and meet the people who build and operate this extraordinary machine.
Throughout the 500 m2 of exhibition, the focus is on the people who work to improve our understanding of the universe. Different objects, life-size audiovisuals and high-definition photographs are used to recreate real spaces of CERN, while the transmissions of the data obtained in the hadron collider are shown to the visitors in real time.
